I recommend that Engineers should get involved in car park layout design and it should not be left solely to Architects
Four design reviews which benefit capital projects
I found that getting key people together to collectively carry out design reviews was very productive
Meetings picked up improvements that individual reviews did not
The four design reviews I found most useful were:
My project management blog is 6 months old
It has been 6 months since I started this blog “project”
Time for a progress review
New Terminology in the project management profession
Project Management is a fast-developing profession. I see many new words and phrases which I did not come across during my career
HVAC solutions could have been better
I felt on many projects, HVAC (heating, ventilation and air conditioning) solutions could have been better
Forecast the cost of post-order modifications
I found that asking Engineers and Buyers to forecast costs for post-order modifications an excellent cost control tool and procurement skill
Minimise change control classification
I tried to keep change control simple. Otherwise it would take up a disproportionate amount of time and effort by those concerned and not add value to delivering the project
Key to this was classifying change to help those forecasting and controlling costs
Modular Builds is hopefully the future
I had various success with encouraging modular builds (sometimes called pre-assembled units) to maximise workshop assembly and minimise site construction
Vendor Data should be given higher priority
Equipment vendors supply two items – the equipment and associated vendor data
I found that many equipment requisitions had little specific thought for vendor data
Many projects suffer design delays due to this not being sufficiently addressed early enough
Project Ownership cannot always be with the Project Manager
Project ownership was always an interesting topic to discuss with End-Users
