Car park design should not be left to Architects

Aerial view of a car park with seven cars

I recommend that Engineers should get involved in car park layout design and it should not be left solely to Architects

I got the impression that Architects concentrated on the buildings and car park layouts were more for presentations to show shrubbery areas etc

Engineers would look at practicalities such as:

  • Space size. I always recommended that parking space sizes should be bigger than the UK standard (2.4m x4.8m) say nearer to or longer than the USA standard (2.7m x 5.5m)
  • Car park design should clearly show pedestrian ways and if they are located between facing car spaces then allow for the overhang of cars from their wheels
  • The travelling and turning of cars should be modelled especially for tight entrances
  • The location of drains and probably oil interception
